Help beat cancer at first annual Sensata Technologies 5K Road Race on October 8 to benefit Dana–Farber Cancer Institute

Attleboro, Massachusetts | September 25, 2006 | People of all ages can support Dana–Farber Cancer Institute and cancer research as donors and participants in the Sensata 5K Race and One–Mile Fun Walk/Run event on Sunday, October 8.

The theme of the event is "Walk, Run, Beat Cancer." Even if you do not enter a race, you can contribute at the event through a raffle drawing for prizes, or you can make a donation.

Businesses are also invited to contribute fund–raising sponsorships for the fight against cancer. Dana–Farber, a Harvard University affiliate in Boston, is a renowned treatment-and-research facility and home of the Jimmy Fund Clinic for pediatric cancer patients.

Racers and walkers will meet on Sensata Technologies grounds near the YMCA Texins Activity Center.

The one–mile race is scheduled to begin on Oct. 8 at 9am and the 5K race is set to start at 9:45am. Sensata will host an awards ceremony immediately following the second race.

Sensata will also hold 25–, 50–, and 100–yard dashes for children beginning at 11am behind the YMCA center. All children in these dashes will receive ribbons.

Like some who will race or walk, patient–sponsor Tori Rando is 17. She now is a senior at King Philip High School in Wrentham. In 2004, Tori learned at Dana–Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic that she had Non–Hodgkin’s lymphoma—the same type that Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher Jon Lester was diagnosed with about a month ago. She underwent a year of chemotherapy at Dana–Farber. How would she describe the treatment center’s staff?

"They are amazing and that’s an understatement," she replies. "They did everything to make me feel better physically and emotionally."

While undergoing treatment, Tori was out of school for more than 1–½ years. Thanks to tutors, she expects to graduate on time. Her parents Toni and David Rando will join her at the upcoming fund–raiser and will talk about the family’s experience fighting cancer at Dana–Farber.

Big turnout expected

The road race and walk is expected to be one of the largest independently run fund–raising events held for Dana–Farber. Last year when Sensata was part of Texas Instruments, 264 dedicated runners and walkers took part, despite temperatures in the 90s. The TI/Dana–Farber event raised $117,000 for Dana–Farber from 1999 through 2005.

This year, the first 200 registrants in the Columbus Day weekend 5K race will receive free race t–shirts. The fee for registering for the 5K run/walk is $15 before Oct. 6 and is $20 at the event. The fee for the one–mile race is $10. Mailed entries must be received by Oct. 6. Sensata donates all fees to Dana–Farber.

Trophies for top men, women, youths

The top three 5K finishers in each of these age divisions will receive trophies:

  • Male and female runners 18 and younger
  • 19 through 39
  • 40 through 49
  • 50 through 59
  • 60 and older
Sensata will also award trophies for the 5k event to the:

  • Clydesdale (male runners over 190 pounds)
  • Filly (female runner over 140 pounds)
  • Best overall male and female runners
  • First male and female wheelchair finishers
  • First male and female Sensata finishers
For the one–mile event, Sensata will present trophies to the top three male and female adults (18 and older) and the top three males and females in divisions for ages: 8 and younger, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, and 15 through 17.

Companies invited to donate sponsorships

To raise additional contributions for Dana–Farber, Sensata has invited area businesses to donate sponsorships for the event. The four levels of sponsorship are: Platinum ($2,000 or more); Gold ($1,000 through $1,999); Silver ($500 through $999); and Bronze ($50 through $499). Depending on its level of sponsorship, a business’s logo will be included in the race program and on race tee shirts.

Individuals who want to contribute should make checks payable to "Sensata 5K Road Race" and mail them to Doug Strott, race committee chair:
